NASA is launching an exciting new competition for the 2021-22 school year called the NASA TechRise Student Challenge. This competition offers a remarkable opportunity for student teams in grades six through twelve to get hands-on experience in technology development. They can participate by designing, constructing, and launching experiments using suborbital rockets and high-altitude balloons. Future Engineers, the administrator of this challenge, is collaborating with NASA to make it happen.
Starting in August, student teams can submit their ideas for two types of experiments: climate or remote sensing experiments for high-altitude balloon flights and space exploration experiments for suborbital rocket launches. Winning teams not only receive $1,500 to fund their experiments but also secure a spot on a NASA-sponsored commercial suborbital flight.
Experiments on high-altitude balloons offer more than four hours of flight time, while suborbital rockets provide around three minutes of test time in microgravity conditions. This hands-on experience allows students to create and build their experiments and witness their launch into suborbital space, providing a unique opportunity similar to that of NASA engineers and university researchers.
Jim Reuter, the associate administrator for NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD), expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "This competition is an exciting opportunity for students across the country, whether they're already passionate about space exploration or seeking a new challenge." He emphasized that participating student teams will gain valuable experience in designing and building experiments, mirroring the work of NASA professionals.
The NASA TechRise Student Challenge has several goals. It aims to inspire a deeper understanding of Earth's atmosphere, space exploration, coding, and electronics among students. Additionally, it seeks to instill a broader appreciation for the value of test data. The competition will also enable students to engage with NASA and technology communities, exposing them to potential careers in science, technology, and space exploration fields.
