After years of intensive analysis design, development and flight evaluations through The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other nations' Civil Aviation Authorities (CAAs) and those in aviation. Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance Systems, or TCAS, was created to decrease the chance of midair collisions involving aircraft. The system is known as Airborne Collision Avoidance System or ACAS on the international scene. TCAS is a group of airborne equipment that operates differently from the grounded air traffic controller (ATC) system. They offer collision avoidance protection to the entire range of aircraft models. All TCAS systems are capable of providing some level of collision threat warning, as well as a display of traffic.
The first generation of technology, known as TCAS I, can observe the traffic conditions within the vicinity of an aircraft and provide detailed information about the direction and altitude of the traffic nearby. It can also create collision warnings, referred to as "Traffic Alert" (TA). If a TA is issued, the pilot is informed of the threat; however, they must establish the required collision avoidance method.
The new generation of TCAS II technology provides the pilot with precise instructions on avoiding traffic. These instructions are referred to as "Resolution Advice" (RA) as they can direct the pilot to decelerate, climb, or adjust the vertical speed. TCAS II systems can also communicate with each to ensure that the RA given to each aircraft will maximize separation.
TCAS is a shorthand for Traffic Collision Avoidance Systems. Its purpose is to reduce the chance of midair collisions between two aircraft. The ICAO mandates that all planes carrying more than 19 persons be equipped with this safety feature. This rule also applies to aircraft with a maximal taking-off mass (MTOW) greater than 5,700 kilograms.
Independent of the air traffic controller, TCAS uses nearby aircraft's transponder signals to warn passengers of the possibility of midair crashes. It does this by creating 3D maps of the airspace in which the plane is moving. When it detects other aircraft's transponder signals, it can predict possible collisions based on the speed and altitude of planes carrying through the airspace.
If TCAS detects the possibility of collision, it will notify all the involved aircraft. In this scenario, it will immediately begin a mutual avoidance operation. The system will inform the crew of the plane in question both visually and audibly to either descend or climb in a way that guarantees that, if both paths intersect, they will not cross paths.
