Saab, a Swedish aerospace and defense company, announced Friday that it had been awarded a contract by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration to maintain and enhance the capability of the fighter aircraft JAS 39 Gripen CF/D.
The company noted that the order value is SEK 3.5 Billion ($340 Million), and the contract period will be 2023-2029. FMV also has options to place additional orders during 2023 for capability enhancements. These enhancements will give Sweden a more powerful and effective fighter capability. A new engine version will be fitted to the aircraft, improving flight performance. The upgrade will allow for more excellent attack capabilities and a more efficient electronic warfare system.
This order includes an upgrade to Saab's latest fighter radar. It provides enhanced performance and a more excellent detection and tracking range. The upgraded and future-proofed avionic system allows quick software updates to the sensor function, among other things. The upgrade will give the Swedish Air Force a much stronger fighter capability. This contract represents a significant leap forward in radar performance and functionality, both hardware and software.
This capability enhancement will improve interoperability between Gripen E and Gripen C/D by upgrading support systems and data connections. Interoperability is essential as the platforms will be used simultaneously over many years.
