From its appearance in the night sky to its powerful gravitational pull on Earth, the Moon has long been a source of wonder. But have you ever wondered what makes this bright and silvery celestial body so unique? Here are five fascinating facts about the Moon that everyone should know!
The Moon's age and formation remain a mystery, though scientists generally agree that it's about 4.5 billion years old, making it likely to be as old as Earth itself! It is believed that a massive object (assumed to be twice the size of Mars) slammed into the Earth billions of years ago, resulting in an explosion that ejected debris into space. That debris clumped together to form our beloved Moon!
While the Moon's core is small compared to the entire mass, it's still relatively large. The iron-rich core is estimated to be between 300 and 1300 miles wide, while its molten mantle is estimated to be up to 1800 miles thick. This means that the total diameter of the Moon is much larger than its visible size. The heat generated by the Moon's core is thought to be what causes its surface temperatures to range from -387°F to 257°F.
Without an atmosphere, water can't exist in its liquid form, meaning there is no rain or snow on the Moon. This also means life cannot survive on the Moon's surface since all known life forms require air and water. While some of the craters may have trace amounts of volatile compounds, there isn't enough to sustain any living organisms. As a result, astronauts and robots are the only objects to have left footprints in moon dust.
That's right; time goes by much slower on the Moon than on Earth. While one day on Earth is 24 hours long, one day on the Moon is 27 Earth days long! This is because it takes 27 Earth days for the Moon to complete its orbit around our planet. This means that if you were standing on the Moon, a sunrise or sunset would take 13 and a half Earth days each!
Even though the Moon is a lifeless, rocky world, its surface is still vulnerable to impacts. Small meteorites, known as micrometeoroids, enter our planet's atmosphere daily and travel much further out into space than on Earth. When they hit the Moon's surface at incredible speeds, they create small craters you can see with the naked eye.
