The Kronstadt Orion represents a series of Russian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) crafted by the Kronstadt Group. These UAVs encompass various models tailored for both Russia's internal use and export markets. Specifically, the Orion-E stands out as a long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle engineered for conducting day-and-night aerial intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations across diverse climatic zones.
Kronstadt embarked on the Orion's development in 2011 under the sponsorship of the Russian Ministry of Defense's Inokhodets initiative. Over the years 2013 to 2015, the company unveiled the initial design of the Orion. By May 2016, RIA Novosti announced the commencement of test flights for the drone.
Fast forward to August 24, 2021, news broke of an agreement between the Russian MoD and Kronshtadt for the acquisition of 5 combat groups of an advanced Orion iteration, termed Inokhodets-RU (also known as Sirius). Each group is set to encompass multiple drones, with the delivery slated for 2023. Notably, the Orion drones were deployed during the expansive Russian-Belarusian exercise Zapad in September 2021, showcasing their operational involvement.
